We have also put together a simple step-by-step instructional video which will teach you everything you need to know about how to make your first tutu.

Before you can begin you will need to pick up a few supplies. If you already have these supplies or suitable substitutes on hand, great! If not, you should be able to find all of these items at your local crafts store or fabric store.

The most common supplies that are needed to begin your tutu project include:

  1. Self Healing Cutting Mat or Quilting mat – Used to protect table when cutting and for making measurements.
  2. Rotary Cutter – Used to cut tulle
  3. Scissors – Used to cut elastic, thread, or anything else you feel like cutting.
  4. Non Slip Ruler – Used as a straight edge to cut perfect straight lines when cutting your tulle.
  5. Needle and Thread – Only used when making an elastic waistband tutu.
  6. Hot Glue Gun – For glueing and securing any embellishments to your tutu that you want to add.
  7. Non Roll Elastic or Ribbon – The type of waistband you are making (elastic waistband or ribbon waistband).
  8. Embellishments – Any ribbons, bows, buttons, flowers, etc to spice up your tutu.
  9. Tulle – The material used to make tutus. There are TONS of different colors to choose from.

Generally, you will use between one to three rolls of 6″ by 25 yard spools of tulle to make a tutu. One roll for a toddler, two rolls for a young girl and three rolls for a young adult.

You may also want to pick up a few extra accessories to go with your tutu. Common accessories include: Bows, buttons, flowers, wands, wings, hair pieces, etc.
